Meet Dr. Richard Szumita
Dr. Richard Szumita earned his dental degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He completed a general practice residency at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Cleveland. His oral and maxillofacial surgery residency was completed at the Veterans Administration Medical Center is East Orange, NJ, with rotations through St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, Paterson and University Hospital, Newark. He has been in private practice since 1993.
Dr. Szumita has a passion for teaching. He served as the Associate Program Director of the St. Joseph’s University Hospital Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program for many years, and in July 2024, he became the Program Director. He lectures across the country to oral surgeons, residents, dental students, and dental hygiene students. He has also served as an examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons for 11 years.
Dr. Szumita is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the New Jersey Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the New Jersey Dental Society, the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, and the New Jersey Dental Society of Anesthesiology, where he also serves as President.
In his spare time, Dr. Szumita enjoys visiting the beach in his beloved home state of Rhode Island, running, or spending time with his family and dogs.
